US President Donald Trump announced that he would suspend most tariffs on exports from Mexico until April 2, marking another shift in trade policy that has left businesses and consumers in limbo.
The decision, shared via Trump's Truth Social account, follows a series of tariff rollbacks in which tariffs have been imposed, paused, reinstated and now delayed once again.
Repeated trade policy shifts have caused volatility in markets and consumer confidence continues to wane. This uncertainty has put pressure on businesses that rely on stable trade agreements with Mexico under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
Trump cited his meetings with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum as the reason for the temporary pause.
“After a conversation with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, I agreed that Mexico will not be required to pay tariffs on anything covered by the USMCA Agreement. This Agreement is valid until April 2. I did this as a compromise and out of respect for President Sheinbaum,” he wrote.
