According to last minute information reported by CNBC, US President Donald Trump's planned customs tariffs have been postponed. The new date could be April 1.
The new tariffs would follow those Trump previously imposed on steel and aluminum imports, as well as those from China, Canada and Mexico. Trump's tariffs on Canada and Mexico are currently suspended after both countries vowed to crack down on illegal crossings and drug smuggling at their borders with the United States.
Trump said Sunday that he plans to impose reciprocal tariffs on “any country” that imposes tariffs on imports into the United States.
According to NBC News, Trump said in a statement on Air Force One, “Simply put, if they tax us, we tax them back.” President Donald Trump is set to hold a press conference in the Oval Office at 11 p.m. today regarding his plan to impose reciprocal tariffs on other countries. According to information provided to CNBC ahead of the press conference, the tariffs Trump is set to announce today won’t go into effect for several months.
