According to breaking news, US President Donald Trump discussed the dismissal of Jerome Powell in his statements with SEC Chairman Paul Atkins.
Trump said he would not fire Powell and never intended to fire the Fed Chair.
Asked in the Oval Office to clarify that he did not want Powell fired, Trump said, “No way,” adding, “I never wanted it.”
The comments represent a dramatic shift for Trump, who has recently toughened his rhetoric against Powell and refused to rule out the possibility of taking the unprecedented step of firing her.
Trump, who has been pressuring the Fed chairman to lower interest rates in hopes of stimulating economic growth, said of Powell last week, “If I wanted him out of there, he would be out very quickly.”
White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said Friday that Trump and his aides were actively studying the possibility of firing Powell.
