The Worldcoin Foundation, which offers a digital currency based on scanning people's faces and irises, is being investigated by the Public Information Access Agency (AAIP) for processing personal data in Argentina.
AAIP Investigates Altcoin Worldcoin's Processing of Personal Data in Argentina
AAIP, the enforcement authority of Law No. 25,326 on the Protection of Personal Data, announced that it is conducting an investigation into the security measures adopted by Worldcoin to protect the privacy of users of the digital app.
The investigation will comprehensively analyze the processes and practices regarding the collection, storage and use of personal data in order to detect possible violations of the rights granted by Law No. 25.326.
In addition, appropriate action will be taken to address any issues identified and to ensure that the company complies with security and privacy standards.
The investigation gained public notoriety in recent weeks for the procedure for scanning the faces and irises of large numbers of individuals in exchange for financial compensation in different parts of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires and the provinces of Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Mendoza and Río Negro.
According to the AAIP, data controllers are required to register their databases with the AAIP, provide information about their processing policies, specify what they need sensitive data for and for how long, and detail the security and privacy measures implemented to protect personal information.
Citizens, on the other hand, have the right to have clear and accessible information on the transfer, use and purpose for which data is collected and processed, especially with regard to sensitive data such as biometric data.
