Srettha Thavis, head of Thailand's opposition party and candidate for prime minister, who attracted attention with his election promises in April, became the country's new prime minister.

The most notable among the election promises of Srettha Thavis was undoubtedly that if he won the election, he would airdrop 10,000 Thai baht, or $300 crypto money, to every citizen.

Speaking to local news agency Bangkok Post, Deputy Secretary General Paopoom Rojanasakul said that they plan to restart the 10,000 baht cryptocurrency airdrop program.

Accordingly, it was stated that the $300 airdrop will be given to every Thai citizen aged 16 and over, and that this money can only be spent within four kilometers of their homes.

It was stated that a kind of national token will be used in the airdrop, not an existing cryptocurrency, and that those interested can turn this money into cash at designated banks.

This airdop project is estimated to cost the country 500 billion THB (14.3 billion dollars).

While the airdrop project has come under criticism for its high cost, Udomsak Rakwongwan, co-founder of FWX finance, a decentralized derivatives platform in the country, told CoinDesk:

“While I would like to see blockchain adoption in Thailand, using blockchain and tokens for this campaign would be overkill.”
