A significant collaborative initiative established by leading companies in the cryptocurrency sector to combat illegal activities has been quietly terminated.

According to information reported by Bloomberg, T3 Financial Crime Unit (T3 FCU), an organization established by Tron (TRX), Tether (the world’s largest stablecoin issuer), and blockchain analytics company TRM Labs, has ceased operations.

Launched in September 2024, the initiative was created to combat fraud, money laundering, and other illicit financial activities in the cryptocurrency sector. The organization’s primary goal was to identify suspicious transactions on the blockchain and collaborate with law enforcement agencies worldwide to freeze proceeds of crime.

In August 2025, Binance, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, also joined the initiative’s expanded collaboration program, T3+. At that time, the company announced that, as a result of its work with international security agencies, it had managed to freeze more than $250 million worth of illicit cryptocurrency assets.

In May 2026, TRM Labs announced that the total value of illicit assets it had helped freeze since the startup’s inception had exceeded $450 million.

What was behind the collapse of the Union?

According to a Bloomberg report citing sources close to the matter, the T3 Financial Crime Unit was disbanded in late August 2026. One source suggested the organization experienced various problems in the past year, including slow response times and a lack of coordination among its members.

While Tron confirmed the initiative had ended, Tether stated it would continue working with TRM Labs to prevent illicit fund movements.

This development comes at a time when cyberattacks have once again become a central issue in the cryptocurrency sector.

The major security incident targeting Binance on October 29th, which affected approximately $6.3 billion in assets, highlighted the importance of coordination among cryptocurrency companies once again.
