Brazil’s state-controlled energy company Petrobras is developing two Cardano-based projects to monitor data on environmentally friendly aviation fuel and renewable diesel.
Petrobras, one of Brazil’s largest companies, has begun using the Cardano blockchain to verify environmental data related to low-carbon fuels. The initiative, announced by the Cardano Foundation, encompasses two research and development projects: one for sustainable aviation fuel and another for Diesel R, which is produced using partially renewable raw materials.
The aviation project aims to prevent multiple companies from claiming ownership of the emission reduction rights resulting from the use of sustainable fuel. In this model, known as “book-and-claim,” an airline can purchase the environmental benefit even if the fuel is physically used on another flight. Therefore, the original owner of the right, the party to whom it is transferred, and when it was used must be reliably recorded.
Developed by Petrobras, the system represents each sustainable aviation fuel characteristic with a standardized token on Cardano. Tokens can be created, transferred, and permanently retired once the environmental benefit has been used up. This aims to prevent the same emission reduction from being claimed a second time.
Passengers can also enter their departure and arrival airports into the system to calculate the environmental benefit associated with their flight. They can then receive a verifiable document linked to a source fuel certificate.
The second project focuses on Diesel R, a product containing renewable raw materials such as vegetable or animal fats. The plan is to record data on Cardano throughout the fuel’s production, transportation, and usage phases. This data can help companies report indirect emissions from their suppliers and customers.
Both studies are still in the research phase. Neither Petrobras nor the Cardano Foundation has announced a date for large-scale commercial use of the systems. The amount of fuel being monitored and whether the projects will have a direct impact on ADA usage have also not yet been specified.
