In a recent television interview with CNBC, SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce expressed surprise at the delay in approving a spot Bitcoin ETF, a product she has believed has been making sense for “the last five years.”
Peirce, who has been a staunch supporter of cryptocurrencies in the past, admitted that his views on the Bitcoin ETF differ significantly from those of other SEC staff. “I cannot predict my colleagues' approach to this issue,” he said.
Peirce expressed concerns about some of the SEC's actions towards crypto, suggesting they could have a negative impact. He stated that he found it problematic that Bitcoin products were subject to increased scrutiny by the SEC.
“I have always been puzzled by the logic of why we do not approve Bitcoin ETF products,” Peirce said.
Peirce did not confirm whether the commission was ready to approve a product traded on the BTC exchange, despite his views and the increasing number of applications following the turn of the Grayscale case.
The SEC is known for its recent defeats against the cryptocurrency market. Recently, he voluntarily dropped the lawsuits he filed against Ripple executives.
