Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) has bluntly denied conspiracy-laden rumors circulating on Chinese social media, calling them “nonsense” and accusing influencers of spreading misinformation for fame.
In a pointed response to a claim by Chinese cryptocurrency commentator Liang Xi that CZ “works for the Fed,” Zhao addressed the allegations on X (formerly Twitter).
“This is ridiculous,” CZ said. “This Chinese influencer says I worked for the FED and I’ve never been to jail. How I wish this were true. There’s a saying among Chinese influencers: make up a story about Binance or CZ and get a lot of attention. Today this guy got 119,000 listeners on X Spaces with this rumor.”
These comments come after a report by the Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed sources, claimed that Zhao had agreed to testify against Tron founder Justin Sun as part of a plea deal with US prosecutors.
The Wall Street Journal claimed that CZ had provided information to prosecutors about Justin Sun. CZ again denied the report, saying:
“They seem to forget who goes to jail and who doesn't. People who are government witnesses don't go to jail. They are protected. I heard someone paid WSJ staff to smear me.”
