Tokyo-based investment firm Metaplanet has purchased another 135 BTC for $12.9 million, continuing its aggressive Bitcoin accumulation strategy.

Metaplanet Expands Bitcoin Holdings with $12.9 Million Acquisition

The latest acquisition brings the company’s total Bitcoin holdings to 2,235 BTC, reinforcing its commitment to making Bitcoin a core part of its business operations.

Metaplanet announced the acquisition on Tuesday, revealing that it purchased Bitcoin at an average price of 14.3 million yen ($95,951) per BTC.

This follows the company’s rapid expansion of its Bitcoin holdings, which rose from 141 BTC in June 2024 to 1,761 BTC at the end of last year.

The firm first announced its Bitcoin accumulation strategy in April 2024 and officially designated Bitcoin treasury operations as a core business in December. Metaplanet aims to hold 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025 and eventually 21,000 BTC by the end of 2026.

Stock Performance and Market Reaction

Despite the recent Bitcoin purchase, Metaplanet's shares are down 1.3% in the morning session in Japan today.

However, the company’s stock has made impressive gains over a longer period of time, up 67.5% since the start of 2025 and 233.7% over the past year, according to Google Finance.

Metaplanet’s Bitcoin-heavy strategy has drawn comparisons to US-based firm Strategy, which has amassed over 200,000 BTC as part of its corporate treasury strategy.

As Bitcoin adoption accelerates among institutional investors, Metaplanet’s aggressive buildout could position it as a major crypto-focused firm in Japan’s evolving financial landscape.
