Apple and Google are evaluating the artificial intelligence project that will be built on the search agreement. Apple had previously held talks with OpenAI about a deal.

Apple Is In Talks To Have Google's Gemini Power The iPhone's Generative AI Features

According to people with knowledge of the matter, Apple Inc. Google is in talks to embed its Gemini AI engine into the iPhone, paving the way for a deal that will shake up the AI industry.

The two companies are in active talks to let Google license Gemini, a suite of generative artificial intelligence models, to power some of Apple's new features coming to iPhone software this year, said the people, who asked not to be named because the talks are private.

According to these people, Apple recently had talks with OpenAI and considered using its model.

If a deal between Apple and Google comes to fruition, it will build on the two companies' search partnership.

Alphabet Inc. Google, owned by Google, has been paying Apple billions of dollars for years to make its search engine the default option in the Safari web browser on iPhones and other devices.

The two sides have not decided on the terms or brand of an AI deal or finalized how it will be implemented, the people said.

Apple is preparing new capabilities based on its own artificial intelligence models as part of iOS 18, the next version of the iPhone operating system.

However, these improvements will focus on features that run on their own devices rather than features offered over the cloud.

That's why Apple is looking for a partner to do the heavy lifting of generative AI, including functions for creating images and writing articles based on simple commands.
