Optimism (OP) Mainnet announced that the “permissionless fault proofs” mechanism, which is an important step towards achieving full decentralization, has been successfully implemented.
This mechanism, which ensures the validity of transactions and the state of the blockchain, has brought OP Stack to “Phase 1” decentralization as defined by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin.
The Fault Proof System, currently live on OP Mainnet, allows users to withdraw tokens from the network without the need for trusted third parties such as central bridges. This development is expected to increase the security and independence of transactions on the platform.
Along with OP Mainnet, other OP Stack Chains such as Base, Mode, and Zora will soon upgrade, further expanding the reach and impact of this innovative technology.
Security Council, also known as multi-sig, retains the ability to return the system to a permissible state in the event of a failure or to protect against network attacks. But the ultimate goal is to achieve full decentralization by reducing the role of the Security Council and supporting multiple proof systems through the Proof-of-Fault System.
As part of the journey towards “Phase 2” decentralization, new proof systems such as Asterisc and Kona will be tested. This follows Buterin's framework of gradually decentralizing Layer 2 solutions (L2s).
Buterin himself welcomed this development, saying:
“Welcome to the tier 1-plus tier 2 club, Optimism. “I look forward to many more L2s joining this club soon, especially some ZKs.”
