JUST IN: Block Production Halts on Base, Coinbase Issues Statement on the Latest Status

Base, a layer-2 scaling solution for Ethereum developed by Coinbase, has suffered its first major outage since its public launch on August 9.

The network stopped producing new blocks for about an hour on September 5, and users trying to send transactions were affected.

According to Coinbase's official statement, the issue was identified and a fix implemented within 14 minutes of initial review. After the fix was applied, the network started to recover and block generation and gossip started again. Coinbase said it is still monitoring the situation and working towards a full recovery.

The reason for the outage is not yet clear. In its latest update, Coinbase stated that there are still problems in the RPC service and that they are working on a solution.

Layer-2 solutions are built on top of Ethereum and use a variety of techniques to move transactions off the main chain and process them faster and cheaper.

Base works using a technique called Optimistic Rollup, which is a method of moving transactions off the main Ethereum chain (layer-1) and processing them on a separate chain (layer-2) secured by the main chain.
