Europe’s Largest Telecommunications Company Deutsche Telekom Makes a Groundbreaking Bitcoin Move

Deutsche Telekom, Europe's largest telecommunications provider, has announced plans to mine Bitcoin, marking a significant expansion of its activities in the field of cryptocurrency and blockchain.

The announcement was made at the BTC Prague conference by Dirk Röder, head of Web3 infrastructure and solutions at T-Systems MMS, a Deutsche Telekom subsidiary.

Röder explained that Deutsche Telekom has been operating a Bitcoin node along with Bitcoin Lightning nodes since 2023. Röder also hinted that the company would venture into Bitcoin mining, calling it 'digital monetary photosynthesis'. When asked directly by Bitcoin influencer Joe Nakamoto if T-Mobile would mine Bitcoin, Röder confirmed: “We will.”

Deutsche Telekom's involvement in the crypto space extends beyond Bitcoin. The company operates nodes and invests in various blockchain networks, including Polkadot, Flow, and Celo. Deutsche Telekom announced its support for Ethereum in 2022 by running validator nodes and collaborating with the liquid staking protocol StakeWise, even joining the governance DAO.

Deutsche Telekom has established partnerships with various blockchain companies, including operating a verification node for Polygon and supporting the Q and Chainlink blockchain networks.
