Minnesota Representative Tom Emmer has surprisingly announced that he will run for Speaker of the US House of Representatives. This announcement comes on the heels of the unprecedented impeachment of Rep. Kevin McCarthy earlier this month.
Emmer shared his decision on Saturday morning's X, stating that his goal was to “bring our council together and get back to business.” Expressing his optimism about the achievements of the Republican majority in the House of Representatives in the last 10 months, Emmer emphasized the importance of unity and teamwork.
Emmer had previously stated that he would not seek the Speakership of the House, but was instead interested in the position of House Majority Leader. He currently ranks third in the leadership of the House of Representatives as majority speaker.
Emmer is known for his pro-cryptocurrency stance, making various statements supporting Bitcoin and the crypto community.
In his previous statement, he emphasized that “the crypto community will thrive with or without us” and called on Congress to develop “common-sense, innovation-oriented regulations” to ensure that opportunities remain in the United States and Americans can safely adopt this technology.
He also explained that “the US is not 'behind China' on crypto,” noting that there is a difference between cryptocurrencies and Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs), which he described as “a government surveillance tool.” In response, he claimed that “crypto provides freedom, it does not destroy it.”
