XRP Ledger (XRPL) is working on a new feature aimed at providing institutional users with greater privacy in token transfers. Included in the upgrade proposals offered with the network’s latest software release, XRPL 3.3.0, “Confidential Transfers” specifically targets the institutional tokenized asset market, which exceeds $530 million.

The Confidential Transfers feature aims to keep token balances and transfer amounts hidden while ensuring that accounts and the types of tokens used remain visible on the network. This is intended to enhance the business privacy that organizations need when conducting transactions on the blockchain.

The feature is primarily designed for Multi-Purpose Tokens (MPTs) based on XRPL. Funds, bonds, and other tokenized financial assets are expected to be among the main use cases.

The system will utilize cryptographic methods such as zero-knowledge proofs to verify the validity of a transfer without disclosing the transaction amount. This structure aims to protect the verifiability of the network while preventing sensitive financial information from being exposed to publicly accessible blockchain data.

According to the data, XRP Ledger currently holds approximately $1.38 billion worth of real-world assets (RWA). Of this, approximately $845.7 million consists of Ripple’s dollar-backed stablecoin, RLUSD.

Excluding RLUSD, the value of tokenized assets on XRPL exceeds $530 million. Issuers of these assets include financial institutions and tokenization companies such as Ondo, VERT Capital, Archax, and Société Générale.

XRPL 3.3.0 doesn’t just include the Confidential Transfers feature. The release also includes other enterprise-oriented upgrade proposals such as Batch, Sponsor, Permission Delegation, and Dynamic MPT. These enhancements aim to address needs such as batch processing, third-party transaction fee coverage, authorization management, and dynamic token modification.

However, these upgrades are not yet active on the XRP Ledger mainnet. For the features to be deployed, at least 80% of XRPL’s trusted validators need to provide uninterrupted support for two weeks.
