Ripple announced it has joined the x402 Foundation as a “Primary Member,” an organization aiming to develop open payment standards for AI agents and web-based applications. Operating under the umbrella of the Linux Foundation, the organization aims to integrate payment transactions directly into internet-based interactions.
According to a statement from the Linux Foundation, the x402 Foundation has officially launched following the completion of the transfer of the x402 protocol, developed by Coinbase, to the foundation. With an open and unbiased governance structure, the organization plans to create a common standard that will allow AI agents, APIs, and applications to perform financial transactions as easily as exchanging data.
The x402 protocol embeds secure payment capabilities directly into HTTP-based internet interactions. This enables AI agents to purchase services, pay for API usage, or perform machine-to-machine transactions with other automated systems.
Ripple stated that as AI agents begin to take on a greater role in transaction processes, there will be a need for fast, reliable, and interoperable payment infrastructures. The company announced that it has developed tools and infrastructure for this area on the XRP Ledger, and that thanks to x402 support, AI agents can now transact using XRP and RLUSD.
RippleX Senior Vice President Markus Infanger stated that open standards form the foundation of reliable and interoperable machine-to-machine payments. Infanger added that Ripple will support the consistent application of standards across the industry by contributing to the x402 Foundation’s technical and governance efforts.
