US-based cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has taken a significant step to expand its operations in the Australian market.

The exchange announced that it has obtained an Australian Financial Services License (AFSL) through its local subsidiary. This license authorizes Coinbase to offer derivatives products to retail investors in the country.

In a statement, Coinbase emphasized that it is one of the first crypto-focused platforms to receive this license. Under the license, Australian investors will be offered perpetual futures contracts, including cryptocurrency and equity-based options. Futures and options trading is also planned to be introduced in the future.

The company stated that with this move, it aims to compete with traditional financial services, and will utilize the speed and efficiency of crypto infrastructure in stock transactions, payments, and other financial products.

The AFSL license requires Coinbase to be subject to the same regulatory framework as traditional financial institutions operating in Australia. This includes compliance with strict rules in areas such as customer asset protection, transparency, corporate governance, and consumer rights.

This development comes ahead of the Corporations Amendment (Digital Assets Framework) Bill 2025, which is expected to come into effect. This bill would require all cryptocurrency platforms operating in the country to obtain licenses.

Founded in 2022, Coinbase Australia is noted for its contributions to digital asset regulation in the region and its rapid expansion of operations in recent times. Furthermore, the company is said to be continuing its global expansion strategy by obtaining new regulatory approvals in the US.
