After Russia's invasion of Ukraine, western countries imposed some economic sanctions on Russia. Russia, which is having a hard time in the face of these economic sanctions, has approached cryptocurrencies.
Cryptocurrency and CBDC studies continue in Russia, which is trying to circumvent sanctions using cryptocurrencies.
At this point, a new move came from Russia.
The Central Bank of Russia said in a statement that Russia will begin tests of the digital ruble next week.
Real Digital ruble tests will take place on August 15 with 13 banks and limited customer participation.
Pilot participants will be able to pay in digital rubles at 30 retail outlets in 11 Russian cities.
Olga Skorobogatova, vice-president of the Central Bank of Russia, said that the start of tests with the real digital ruble represents a very important stage for the project.
“The launch of pilot tests with real digital rubles is the most important phase of the project.
This will allow us to test the operation of the digital ruble platform in an already industrial environment, implement all the necessary procedures with the participation of customers, adjust processes if necessary, and make sure that the customer path is convenient and understandable for users.
We plan to put the digital ruble into mass circulation based on the results of the phased tests and upon successful completion of the piloting of all scenarios for operations with the digital ruble.
From 2025, we expect citizens and businesses to be able to actively use the national digital currency at their own will.”
