Cryptocurrency derivatives exchange BitMEX announced that it will physically send 1 Bitcoin (BTC) to the Moon. The launch is planned to take place on January 8 at 12:18 UTC from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

Bitcoin, marked with a public address (1MoonBTCixFH3XTrWRCbMpK23o74nQrA1Q) and a private key, is expected to land on the Moon's surface on February 23, 2024.

The cold wallet, weighing 43 g and loaded with 1 BTC, will be carried by the United Launch Alliance (ULA) Vulcan rocket and integrated into Peregrine-1, a commercial lunar lander.

BitMEX's Bitcoin is among 201 payloads heading to the lunar surface from governments, companies, universities and NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative. This mission represents West's first soft Moon landing since NASA's Apollo 17 mission in 1972.

The mission, carried out in collaboration with Astrobotic, Bitcoin Magazine and Oxcart Assembly, will transport BTC to the Moon as a commercial payload, similar to Dogecoin. The DOGE-1 mission, planned to be launched in February 2024, received approval from NTIA and FCC, marking an important milestone in Dogecoin's ambitious journey to the Moon.
